Planning Window — act now.
You're in this window right now. Old CGT rules still fully apply. This is the time to inventory your crypto, document holdings, get professional advice, and consider your strategy. The 50% discount still applies to any sales you make today.

1 July 2027
CGT Rules Change + Rollover Window Opens
The 50% CGT discount is abolished. From this date, gains on crypto are split: old gains (up to 1 July 2027) keep the 50% discount, new gains get CPI indexation + 30% minimum tax. No CGT event is triggered just by crossing this date — only when you sell. The rollover window for trust restructuring also opens.
Big Change
2027–28 Tax Year
$250 Working Australians Tax Offset (WATO)
Permanent $250 tax offset for all workers including sole traders, applied automatically on lodgement. Stacks with the legislated personal tax cuts and the $1,000 instant deduction.
Benefit
1 July 2028
Discretionary Trust 30% Minimum Tax Starts
Trustees of discretionary trusts must pay minimum 30% tax on all trust income. Corporate beneficiaries get no tax credit. Income-splitting to low-income family members is largely neutralised. Fixed trusts, SMSFs, and charitable trusts are excluded.
Trust Impact
30 June 2030
Rollover Relief Window Closes
The 3-year window to restructure assets out of a discretionary trust (into a company or fixed trust) without triggering CGT closes. If you have a trust holding crypto or investments, you have until this date to restructure. After this, any restructure triggers a CGT event.
